Open Free Constitution

Know your rights by reading them yourself.Read every word of the Constitution, with a plain-English version beside it, and decide for yourself what it means.

Questions people are asking right now

  • “Can police search my phone?”Read the Fourth Amendment in the original and in plain English.
  • “Do I have to answer police questions?”A situation card points you to the amendment behind the answer.
  • “What are my rights at a protest?”See what the First Amendment covers, and where it stops.
  • Start with the PreambleRead the documents in full, in order, and search any word.

The real problem

Most sites about the Constitution want to tell you what it means. Few just let you read it.

The insightThe text stands on its own. Read the documents and decide what they say.

What was built

  1. Every article and amendment sits beside a plain-English version.
  2. Situation cards start from a real moment and point to the right amendment.
  3. Search covers the full Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.

How it's built

  • A short Python script turns Markdown files into the site. The result is a plain folder of pages that can be hosted anywhere.
  • Every jump link on the home page is checked against the real section headings. If someone renames a heading, the build stops and says so.
  • Every article and amendment has plain-English text beside it, and the original stays in view.

What changed

The resultA citizen can read the document itself in a few minutes and form their own view.
